History

The name "Malibagh" is rooted in the Bengali words মালি (māli), meaning gardener, and বাগ (bāg), meaning garden. This nomenclature harks back to the era of Muslim rule when Dhaka was adorned with numerous gardens, each meticulously maintained by appointed gardeners. These gardeners lived together in specific quarters, which gradually came to be known as Malibagh to distinguish them from another locality named Malitola in Old Dhaka.

One notable landmark in Malibagh is Abdul Aziz Lane, named after Abdul Aziz, a respected municipal commissioner of Dhaka in 1921 and a dedicated social worker. His contributions to the community left a lasting impact, etching his name into the history of the neighborhood.

The area of Malibagh saw a significant influx of settlers in the 1950s, marking the beginning of its rapid development. This growth transformed Malibagh from a cluster of gardener's quarters into a vibrant residential area. Today, Malibagh stands as a testament to the city's rich history and cultural evolution, retaining its unique identity while embracing modernity.
